Biology

The Open Choice M.S. program is open to qualified undergraduates interested in a course work Master of Science (M.S.) degree in the following concentrations:

Child Study and Human Development

The Open Choice M.S. program is open to qualified undergraduates interested in:

  • The Master of Arts (M.A.) in Applied Child Development

Eligible students must have a 3.25 GPA their senior year. Students are eligible for the program up to one year following graduation from the undergraduate program at Tufts.

Diversity and Inclusion Leadership

The Open Choice M.S. program is open to qualified undergraduates interested in:

  • The Master of Arts (M.A.) in Diversity and Inclusion Leadership

Economics

  • The Master of Science in Economics (M.S.)-course-based track

Education

The Open Choice M.S. program is open to qualified undergraduates interested in:

  • The Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) for middle and high school mathematics, French, Spanish, German, Japanese, English, political science/political philosophy, history, biology, earth science, chemistry, physics, general science, Latin and classical humanities
  • The Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) in Art Education program for licensure to teach in grades PK-8 or grades 5-12
  • The Master of Science (M.S.) in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM)
  • The Master of Arts (M.A.) in Educational Studies

The Open Choice M.S. program is also open to alumni applying to an M.A.T. program in education who are within 2 years of graduation from Tufts. Qualified applicants must have:

  • strong letters of recommendation
  • a senior year GPA of 3.25 or better in their major, and a strong commitment to education and public service.

History

The Open Choice M.S. program is open to qualified undergraduates interested in:

  • the Master of Arts (M.A.) in History
  • the Master of Arts (M.A.) in History and Museum Studies

In addition to history majors, the department will also consider applicants from other majors on a case-by-case basis. Qualified applicants must have strong recommendations, a GPA of 3.25 or better and a strong commitment to academic research and scholarship.

Mathematics

The Open Choice M.S. program is open to qualified undergraduates interested in:

  • The Master of Science (M.S.) in mathematics

Qualified applicants must have:

  • Strong letters of recommendation
  • 3.25 GPA or better
  • By the time of application a substantial portion of the undergraduate math major requirements completed. This normally includes two of the following:
    • Math 135
    • Math 136
    • Math 145
    • Math 146
  • Completion of two of the following sequences:*
    • Math 135-6
    • Math 145-6
    • Math 151-2
    • Math 161-2

This requirement must be met before starting the program and can be fulfilled through graduate courses.

Music

Open to qualified undergraduates seeking graduate studies in composition/theory, ethnomusicology, and musicology.

Qualified applicants must have strong letters of recommendation and a GPA of 3.25 or better in their major.

Occupational Therapy

The Open Choice M.S. program is open to qualified undergraduates interested in the professional entry-level program in Occupational Therapy:

  • the Master of Science in Occupational Therapy (M.S. in OT, no thesis)
  • the Master of Science, Occupational Therapy (M.S., OT, with thesis in biological science area)

Qualified applicants must have:

  • Strong letters of recommendation
  • a senior year GPA of 3.25 or better in their major, and
  • a demonstrated commitment to serving individuals or populations with personal or environmental challenges that affect their ability to participate in satisfying and productive lives
  • certificate of hepatitis B vaccination series upon enrollment
  • the following prerequisites:
    • Abnormal Psychology
    • Developmental Psychology or Human Development (will accept a course in the area of Child Development or Life Span Development)
    • One additional social science course (this course can be in the area of psychology, anthropology, sociology)
    • Two courses in biology, including content in cell biology. (Either A&P I and II, or a semester of Anatomy and a semester of Physiology may be substituted for the Biology prerequisite.) One Biology course must have a lab component.
    • One course in introductory statistics.

  • The Master of Arts (M.A.) in Urban and Environmental Policy and Planning

The Open Choice M.S. program is also open to alumni applying to an M.A. in Urban and Environmental Policy and Planning who are within 2 years of graduation from Tufts

Qualified applicants must have:

  • strong letters of recommendation
  • a strong commitment to community and public engagement
  • relevant work experience, either during or subsequent to college
