Take a Class (Graduate Career Advancement Program)

You don't need to be a graduate student to take Tufts graduate courses.

The Graduate Career Advancement Program (GCAP) offers the opportunity to take Tufts undergraduate and graduate level courses without enrolling in a degree program. GCAP students take the same classes as our degree students and may enroll, for either credit or audit, in up to four courses per semester. GCAP is offered during the Fall and Spring terms. Please refer to the Summer Session website for summer enrollment information.

As a GCAP student, you have access to more than 2,000 undergraduate and graduate-level arts, sciences and engineering courses offered on the Medford campus (excluding engineering management). Use the link below to view our course offerings published in our Student Information System (SIS); you do not need a login to view courses. From the "Search for Classes" link you can search by department or keyword, and you can then filter those results to find courses that fit your schedule. GCAP is offered exclusively by Arts, Sciences, and Engineering so please be sure to use that option as the "Course Career" when you search. Expand the course "Details" to see additional information such as the current and maximum enrollment numbers.

Application Information and Requirements

The Graduate Career Advancement Program (GCAP) is open to U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and current visa holders who are eligible for study (example: F2; H1B). A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university (see the REAL program website if you do not have an undergraduate degree) and a minimum undergraduate GPA of 2.75 are required for admission.

A complete application consists of the following:

  1. The online application
    • The GCAP application can only be accessed through the direct link on this page
    • There is no application fee for GCAP
  2. A copy of your undergraduate transcript uploaded to the application
    • Not required for Tufts credit voucher recipients and Tufts alumni
    • Unofficial and web-based transcripts are acceptable as long as the names of the student and institution are displayed, and the degree and conferral date are posted
    • A minimum GPA of 2.75 (on a 4.0 scale) is required
  3. A copy of your visa, if applicable

Please submit all materials through the online application. The application deadline is September 1 for the Fall term, and January 10 for the Spring term. Applications submitted after the deadline or without the required documentation may not be reviewed in time for enrollment in the requested term. Please note that the Fall application cycle opens on June 1, and the Spring application cycle opens on November 1. Submitted applications are typically reviewed within 3-5 business days.

Note: Spring 2019 application is closed. Fall 2019 application opens June 1.

Registration and Payment
GCAP students register in person with a paper enrollment form during the first two weeks of the term. Online pre-registration is reserved for matriculated degree students, and is not available through GCAP. Enrollment as a GCAP student is at the discretion of the instructor, and as space allows. Detailed registration instructions and the course enrollment form will be provided to accepted students before the start of the term.

Tuition for the 2018-2019 academic year is $1,710 per credit for courses offered by the School of Arts and Sciences, and $1,718 per credit for courses offered by the School of Engineering. Most courses are 3 or more credits; credit values are listed in the class search. The fee for auditing a course is $1,000. Payment is due at the time of registration.

Transfer of Credit

Tufts courses are widely accepted at other institutions. If you intend to transfer credit from Tufts to a degree program elsewhere, please check with your home institution for approval. The Graduate Career Advancement Program also offers a smooth transition to graduate study at Tufts. Courses taken through the program are often transferable into graduate programs within the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and the School of Engineering. Once accepted, students are permitted to transfer a maximum of two applicable courses into a graduate program.
