When I was considering graduate programs, something that stood out to me about Tufts’ MS in Sustainability was its emphasis on practical, real-world experience. Now, as a student, I’ve come to appreciate just how valuable this hands-on approach is, especially through our field projects.

Field projects allow students to apply classroom knowledge to a real-world context by working directly with organizations on sustainability challenges. This semester, my group is collaborating with East Somerville Main Streets (ESMS) on their Cultural District application, an initiative aimed at fostering a thriving, inclusive business district that celebrates the area’s rich cultural diversity.

ESMS is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting local entrepreneurs, advocating for equitable urban development and enhancing the vibrancy of East Somerville’s business community. As part of our project, we are researching best practices from other successful cultural district applications in Massachusetts, engaging residents and business owners through community outreach, and exploring ways to spotlight the diverse businesses and artistic contributions that make East Somerville unique. This has deepened my understanding of the intersection between sustainability and economic development, and it’s been incredibly rewarding to contribute to a community-driven initiative with a long-term impact.

This experience has reinforced why Tufts is such a great place to study sustainability. The program goes beyond theory, equipping students with the skills, experience, and professional connections needed to drive real change. Whether you’re interested in corporate sustainability, environmental policy, or grassroots community development, field projects bridge the gap between learning and doing. They offer an invaluable opportunity to apply sustainability principles in meaningful ways.

If you’re a prospective student wondering how Tufts prepares you for a career in sustainability, I highly encourage you to explore the field project opportunities. They don’t just build your resume – they also provide firsthand experience that sets you apart.
