Resources I Used When Preparing for Graduate School

If you had told me a year ago I’d be navigating a new country, a new school, and a new life with ease, I would’ve laughed. But thanks to the support I’ve received at Tufts, this once-daunting journey has turned into one of the most fulfilling adventures of my life.
My name is Khadija Binte Nasir, and I’m currently earning my MAT in High School and Middle School Education at Tufts University. Like many of you, I was filled with a whirlwind of emotions— excitement tinged with fear, anticipation clouded by uncertainty. I was leaving behind everything familiar, stepping into the unknown. What I didn’t realize then was that Tufts wouldn’t just provide me with an education— rather, it would become my sanctuary!
Tufts began welcoming me into its community the moment I received my acceptance letter. It wasn’t just a formal introduction; my advisor genuinely sought to understand my goals, interests, and how I envisioned my future. Together, we handpicked courses and crafted a teaching placement that aligned perfectly with my goals. Before every class, he makes it a point to ask how everyone is doing, showing genuine care for our well-being. He often follows up with emails to check how things are progressing, especially knowing the challenges I face as an international student. He even went the extra mile, showing me virtual maps of the campus. He helped me familiarize myself with the spaces I'd soon call home, so I wouldn’t feel lost on my first day! His unwavering support before I even set foot on campus made me feel valued in a way I never anticipated. I wasn’t just another student; I was a person with dreams, and Tufts was invested in helping me realize them!
Then there was the International Center, my lifeline during the flurry of visa applications and transitioning to life in a new country! They guided me through the intricate maze of immigration, employment, and adjusting to life in the U.S. They hosted seminars on everything from visa regulations to securing internships and jobs after graduation. Anytime I have even the slightest confusion or question, I just walk up to them, and they are always ready to help with warmth and clarity. Their care and expertise went beyond simply answering questions, they eased my fears and made me feel like I wasn’t navigating this journey alone.
The Dean of Students Office at Tufts is an essential part of my experience, offering so much more than just academic guidance. They are a constant source of support, whether through their 24/7 Help Line, which is available for any urgent concerns at any time of day, or through their regular communication via the Student Message Archive. This archive ensures that all students stay informed about key updates and resources, providing easy access to messages we receive throughout the academic year. Whether I need help navigating the pressures of my coursework, handling personal challenges, or simply seeking advice on how to balance everything, the Dean’s Office is always just a visit or phone call away!
To future international students, I want to offer this: I understand the fears and uncertainties that come with stepping into the unknown. But trust me when I say, you’re not just coming to Tufts for an education; you’re joining a community that will embrace you, uplift you, and guide you every step of the way. From the personalized mentorship of my professors to the unwavering support of the International Center and the countless opportunities that await, Tufts has been a space where my voice is heard, my ideas are encouraged, and my dreams are nurtured!
When I look back on my time at Tufts, it won’t just be the classes or the degree that stand out; it’ll be the people, the support, and the sense of belonging I found here. For those of you beginning this new chapter, welcome to a place that will not only challenge you academically but embrace you wholeheartedly!
