Tufts announces new master’s degree in Artificial Intelligence
In recent years, the prevalence of artificial intelligence (AI) has skyrocketed, with a wide range of industries adopting AI technology. In response to this growing demand for expertise in the field, the School of Engineering is proud to announce a new master’s program in artificial intelligence. The new MS in AI will equip students with essential skills and a strong emphasis on the underlying ethical considerations, preparing them for roles as AI engineers, data scientists, and researchers.
Now accepting applications for Fall 2025, the MS in AI program supports students as they develop their ability to understand, implement, and deploy a wide range of AI technologies. In keeping with the School of Engineering’s focus on being an engine for good, the new AI program will emphasize the ethical and social contexts of AI in the world. Long-standing centers and labs at Tufts such as the Human Robot Interaction Lab and the Machine Learning Group have prioritized ethical considerations in robotics and AI behavior. The MS in AI program will similarly focus on ethics and interdisciplinary learning with the goal to shape AI for the betterment of humanity and the planet.
The new program includes department-specific tracks, one housed in the Department of Computer Science and the other in Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. The first track will focus on the foundations and applications of machine learning and artificial intelligence from a computational perspective, with a strong emphasis on the broader social context in which AI technologies are developed and deployed. The second track integrates core principles of machine learning and artificial general intelligence with specialized engineering domain knowledge. The curriculum covers both fundamental and systems concepts in AI and explores how to apply these methods to diverse domains.
Tufts’ strength in computer science, engineering, and interdisciplinary learning, combined with their proximity to high-tech hubs such as Boston and Cambridge, make the School of Engineering an ideal environment for students interested in expanding their AI knowledge and career potential. Expert faculty members who regularly contribute to advancements in the field will provide in-depth instruction and support students as they become leaders in AI. The program’s interdisciplinary approach and hands-on curriculum will position graduates as well-qualified candidates for careers in the industry or to continue on to do advanced research at a doctoral level. Both full-time and part-time options will be available to accommodate the needs of a diverse range of incoming students.
