Why Tufts?

After completing my undergraduate degree, I found myself at a crossroads. I was determined to continue in research, which made pursuing a PhD an obvious path. At the same time, the uncertainty of funding and the practical considerations of entering a specialized field with future industry aspirations made me pause. I wanted a program that could give me a sense of both worlds, a place where I could gain hands-on research experience while keeping my options open for the future. That’s exactly what I found at Tufts and its MS in Biology program.

One of the first things that drew me to Tufts was the flexibility in course selection. The program allows me to choose ten courses from over a hundred options, making it highly personalized to my niche interests. Because there’s no mandatory thesis component, I can explore a broader range of courses while still gaining lab experience that prepares me for potential PhD work.

The student-to-faculty ratio is another big factor. Classes are small, and interactions with faculty are personable. What has struck me most since arriving here is the approachability of professors. Before joining, I worried that graduate school might feel isolating, but the collaborative environment at Tufts has been a breath of fresh air. Discussions with professors and fellow students often spark new ideas and help me see my work from fresh perspectives.

Tufts also offers ample resources for student support and career guidance. From 1:1 career advising with Prof. Frank David to insights for international students with Matt Casey, there’s always someone ready to guide you. Financially, Tufts provides reasonable scholarships for graduate students, making it easier to focus on academics and research without excessive stress.

Finally, the location is ideal. Medford is calm and laid-back, a great environment for focused work. Boston is just a short ride away, providing access to a vibrant city, research opportunities, and cultural experiences whenever I want. It also makes renting and living convenient.

In short, Tufts provides the perfect combination of flexibility, research opportunities, community, and resources. It allows me to explore my interests, engage with supportive faculty, and prepare for both academic and professional pathways. Since arriving, I’ve found the environment collaborative, energizing, and inspiring, exactly what I was looking for in a graduate program.
