Why Tufts?
Welcome to the next part of our "Why Tufts?" blog series, where current Tufts grad students share why they chose to pursue their graduate education here at Tufts University. Today, I’m excited to share my story as a first-year MS in Sustainability student.
Finding My Place at Tufts
Choosing the right graduate program can be daunting, especially when it involves moving from your home country. I moved to the US from Ghana in August. While I was excited about taking this next step in my academic journey, I also had to explain to family and friends back home why Tufts was the perfect choice for me. So, what makes Tufts stand out?
Support from Day One
When I started looking for schools to pursue my graduate studies, Tufts was, by far, the most approachable. From the moment I reached out, the admissions team and my department walked me through every step of the process, making sure I understood exactly what was needed at each stage. I never felt like I was alone. They answered my questions with care, helped me navigate all the logistics, and gave me a sense of comfort. Even before stepping foot on campus, I already felt like I belonged, which speaks volumes about the kind of community Tufts fosters. That sense of belonging has only grown stronger since I arrived.
Location and Community
Tufts’ location is a huge plus. Situated on the scenic hills of Medford/Somerville, it's surrounded by beautiful greenery, yet is only a quick train ride away from the heart of Boston. This blend of nature and city life gives you the best of both worlds: a peaceful environment to focus on your studies, and easy access to the cultural and professional opportunities that Boston offers.
At Tufts, diversity is celebrated, and the collaborative environment makes it easy to connect with people from different backgrounds. As someone passionate about sustainability, it's amazing to see how students, faculty, and staff actively engage in conversations and initiatives around sustainability and social impact.
A Hub for Interdisciplinary Learning
In my MS in Sustainability program, Tufts' commitment to promoting interdisciplinary learning is admirable. Classes are designed to be engaging and push boundaries, encouraging us to think critically about real-world issues. What I love most is how students from various disciplines come together to share their perspectives and collaborate on projects. This exchange of ideas has been incredibly enriching, sparking innovative solutions to complex problems. It’s not just about what you learn in the classroom; it’s about how you apply that knowledge to create meaningful change.
A Welcoming Environment for International Students
As an international student, finding a place that feels like home can be tough, but Tufts has made the transition very smooth. From orientation to the support services available on campus, Tufts shows how much it cares about making sure international students feel included and appreciated. Being surrounded by people who are eager to embrace and learn about different cultures and experiences has been one of the most rewarding parts of my time here.
Why Tufts, You Ask?

Whether you're passionate about sustainability, like me, or have a different area of interest, Tufts is definitely a place where you can thrive and make an impact.
I’m grateful to be a part of this community, and I can’t wait to see where this journey takes me. If you're considering Tufts for your graduate studies, I encourage you to do it and discover all that it has to offer. It might just be the perfect fit for you, too.
