Below are the tuition costs for GSAS programs for the 2024-2025 academic year.

Note: Starting with students who enrolled in Fall 2023, most GSAS programs bill tuition using a per credit model instead of billing semi-annually for tuition. This change was made to provide students better flexibility so they may "pay-as-they-go". Students in multi-year programs who enrolled before Fall 2023 will be billed using the flat tuition process they started their program with.

PhD Programs

The 2024-2025 tuition rate for Graduate School of Arts and Sciences PhD students is $4,975 per semester. Please visit the Student Financial Services website and their page on Cost of Attendance for Graduate School

Tuition for Graduate School of Arts and Sciences PhD students is fully covered by Tufts tuition scholarships. PhD students are also eligible for federal loans to cover the cost of living expenses. In addition, many departments/programs offer research or teaching assistantships with admission. To learn more about specific PhD program packages, applicants should contact the graduate director of the program to which they are applying.

Note: Students enrolled in a PhD program are provided a subsidy for the full cost of Tufts Student Health Insurance and the Health and Wellness fee for five years and for eligible sixth year students.

Master's Programs

GSAS bills tuition using a per-credit billing model, meaning you are billed for the number of credits you take each semester. This billing model is used to provide students better flexibility so they may "pay-as-they-go".

Ancillary Fees for GSAS

  • A Graduate Student Activity Fee is assessed to students in master's and doctoral programs to support the activities of the Graduate Student Council. The 2024-2025 Graduate Student Activity Fee is $62. This fee is not charged to certificate students or students enrolled in fully online programs.
  • A Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) premium is assessed for comprehensive individual medical and mental health coverage. Students have the option to purchase additional coverage for spouses, domestic partners, and children directly through the health insurance carrier. Students who are admitted full-time and part-time students registered for seven (7) or more credits in residential (including hybrid) programs are automatically enrolled in SHIP while tuition is being charged. Students enrolled in fully online programs are not eligible for SHIP. The insurance may be waived if proof of outside comparable coverage from a US carrier is submitted by the deadline. Please visit the Student Health Insurance page for the updated premium for the academic year, as well as the final date for waiving SHIP.
  • A Student Health and Wellness (SHAW) Fee is mandatory for students who are admitted full-time, and part-time students registered for seven (7) or more credits in residential (including hybrid) programs. This fee covers the use of Tufts Health Service, Counseling and Mental Health Service (CMHS), the Center for Awareness, Resources, and Education (CARE), and Health Promotion and Prevention (HPP), all on the Medford/Somerville campus. This fee is assessed per semester while tuition is still being charged. Students enrolled in fully online programs are not charged the SHAW fee, and are not eligible for services at Health Service, CMHS, or CARE. Please visit the SHAW webpage for updated per-semester charges.

Continuation Policies and Fees for GSAS

All students will be charged continuation tuition for each semester after their expected degree completion period (two years for most master's students; three years for master's students in occupational therapy (entry-level program), school psychology, and urban and environmental policy and planning; three years for entry-level OTD students; and six years for PhD students). The 2024-2025 continuation tuition is $1,000 per semester.

We will provide the earliest possible notification of changes in tuition and other fees. Most tuition rate changes are effective in the fall term each academic year. The Entry-Level OTD Program, which starts in the summer, has tuition rate changes at the beginning of the summer term. The Trustees of Tufts College reserve the right to change the tuition or to establish additional fees or charges for special features or services whenever such action is deemed advisable.
