Tuition and Financial Aid

The cost of a graduate education varies, depending on the amount of support you receive. The types of funding (scholarships, fellowships, and assistantships) available to support students vary by school and program. To learn more about financial aid packages, applicants should contact the department to which they are applying.

Graduate School of Arts and Sciences 

Master's Programs

The 2018-2019 tuition for M.A., M.S., and M.P.P. programs (except as noted below) is $51,288. Tuition for the M.A.T. program is $44,904 for academic year 2018-2019.

There are many scholarships and financial aid packages available. To learn more about specific master's degree financial aid packages, applicants should contact the department to which they are applying.

The following master's programs require the payment of tuition for two years, and tuition varies for these programs: Occupational Therapy, School Psychology, Urban and Environmental Policy and Planning, and M.F.A. Studio Art. Tuition for these programs is as follows: Occupational Therapy (entry-level program) $51,288; School Psychology $44,904; Urban and Environmental Policy and Planning (M.A.) and Environmental Policy and Planning (M.S.) $36,988, and Studio Art (M.F.A.) $46,268. Doctoral Programs

Tuition for Ph.D. programs is charged for five years. The 2018-2019 Ph.D. tuition is $30,772. Tuition for the OTD program is $51,288 for academic year 2018-2019.

The tuition for full-time Arts and Sciences Ph.D. students is covered by tuition scholarship. Many departments also offer a research or teaching assistantship with admission. Students enrolled in a Ph.D. program are provided health insurance free of charge while tuition is being billed (five years). To learn more about specific Ph.D. program packages, applicants should contact the department to which they are applying.

Certificate Programs

The 2018-2019 tuition for most certificates offered by the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences is $998 per credit. The rate also applies to courses taken in the summer. Students enrolled in the certificate programs listed below pay a reduced rate. The reduced tuition only applies to courses required for the certificate. The 2018-2019 per-credit tuition for these programs is as follows:

  • Early Childhood Technology (hybrid) - $500
  • Occupational Therapy School-Based Practice (online) - $832
  • Urban Justice and Sustainability (hybrid) - $832
Part-Time Students

Students who are admitted to undertake a program on a part-time basis register for one or two courses a semester and pay the prevailing per-credit rate each year until they have registered and paid for all credits required for the degree. The 2018-2019 tuition for part-time students is $1,710 per credit including credits taken in the summer. Part-time students pay the prevailing per-credit rate each year until their degree is completed. Students who revert to part-time after beginning their program will be required to pay the full degree charge regardless of the number of courses they have left to complete.

School of Engineering 

Engineering Master's Programs

The 2018-2019 tuition for M.S. students is $51,530 ($25,765 a semester). Tuition will be charged for two semesters.

Tufts Gordon Institute: The M.S.I.M. tuition rate for 2018-19 is $51,530 ($25,765/semester). The total tuition for the M.S. in Engineering Management program for 2018-19 is $54,000. The way tuition is billed depends on whether students choose to enroll in the two-year M.S.E.M. or three-year M.S.E.M. program. See additional details.

Engineering Doctoral Programs

Doctoral tuition is $15,578 per semester in 2018-2019. Full tuition is charged for nine semesters unless the student enters the program with an appropriate master’s degree, in which case tuition is charged for six semesters.

Engineering Certificate Programs

The 2018-2019 tuition for School of Engineering certificates is $1,718 per credit, with the exception of the online Teacher Engineering Education Program (TEEP). Tuition for the engineering education certificate is $333 per credit. These rates are also in effect for the summer.

Engineering Part-Time Students

Students who are admitted to undertake the M.S. or Ph.D. program on a part-time basis register for one or two courses a semester and pay the prevailing per-credit rate each year until they have registered and paid for all credits required for the degree. The 2018-2019 tuition for part-time students is $1,718 per credit, including credits taken in the summer. Students who revert to part-time after beginning their program will be required to pay the full degree charge regardless of the number of courses they have left to complete.

Additional Fees

  • A Graduate Student Activity Fee of $62 is assessed annually to support the activities of the Graduate Student Council.
  • A Health Insurance Fee of $2,750 is assessed for comprehensive individual medical coverage for students. If desired, coverage is also available for spouses and children. This fee may be waived if proof of outside coverage from a U.S. carrier is submitted.
  • A Comprehensive Student Health Fee of $842 for use of Tufts health and counseling services is mandatory for students enrolled half-time or more.

Continuation Policies and Fees

  • Graduate School of Arts and Sciences
    All students will be charged continuation tuition for each semester after their expected degree completion period (two years for most master's students; three years for master's students in occupational therapy (entry-level program), school psychology, and urban and environmental policy and planning; three years for OTD students entering without a master's degree; and seven years for Ph.D. students). The 2018-2019 continuation tuition is $800.
  • School of Engineering
    All students will be charged continuation tuition for each semester after the tuition requirements for the program have been satisfied. The 2018-2019 continuation tuition is $800 per semester.
